Method Of Documentation & Measured Drawings

Project 1 : On-site Observation Journal & Video

This project is an on-site exercise where we have to document the physical and the immediate context of the site. It can be from an element as broad as the urban planning itself down to the smallest detail of the ornaments used in the building.

We have to produce 10 onsite manual drawing that give a strong idea of the place that we have carried out the Measured Drawing exercise based on categories specified above. We may use any media such as pencil, pen, markers, charcoal or watercolour to express their observations. Exploration of variety of media is highly encouraged, provided that we are not made of perishable base. The use of fixers is allowed to avoid from loss of colours. We have to add caption for each piece, annotating vital information about what is captured in the sketches.

We have to create a video about 3 - 5 minutes that capture the process of measuring building which contain History and Architecture.

Project 2: Building Report & Photobook

The report is an additional document that accompanies the set of drawings for the building that is measured during the semester. Basically, the report will elaborate on the significance of the building measured from various aspects such as architectural, historical and cultural. In this report, we are required to relate the architecture of the building to its significance, highlighting how the two support the inhabitation of the building. We are required to submit photobook as part of the report.

We are allowed to study the building from various aspects. First, we have to research on History and Architecture of the building. The content include ownership, changes and development of the building ,original design idea, relationship between function and space (interior and exterior), the form, orientation, ornamentation and the related influences, construction methods and materials used,an insight (as a conclusion) on the other examples of buildings of the same typology or its surrounding context (in terms of architecture) or specific matter related to the physical condition or the future of the building studies

Project 3: Measured Drawings & Models

This project will be carried out throughout the semester where we will be assigned to measure and document a historical / architecturally significant or heritage building and translate all the data into a set of drawings. Our group will have to measure one particular assigned by the course coordinator. Apart from doing the measuring exercise on site, we will also need to do additional research in order to piece together all the important data about the building. The model will provide additional physical information of the building.

Reflection

From these project, I learn to recognize and recall techniques of measured drawing and documentation and explain the as-built building constructions, architectural details and elements, interpret historic architectural element, structure and building. I also learn to execute fieldwork and hands-on measurement exercise and to translate measure data into scaled drawings. Besides, produce a report on the building highlighting its importance and historical significance Identify architectural historic structure is one of my learning outcomes. I also know how to explain the application of architectural historic documents and describe architectural cultural heritage. Moreover, i learn to elaborate the relationship between architecture and the significance of the building as well as its inhabitation.
