Studio 6

Project 1a: Pre-Design Studies

As a group, we are required to go to the site to perform investigation and analysis. In this pre-design phase, we are required to conduct studies on users and the contextual conditions of the site and conduct research on guidelines, ongoing activities and future development. We are also required to apply the urban analytical technique(s) learned in Architectural Design Studio V and Theories of Architecture and Urbanism.

This module is a thematic studio based on the theme of “sustaining humanities’ architecture for people, place and time. Designing for sustainability has been a fundamental issue for architects in our time within global and regional contexts. In line with the current discourse on sustainability, it upholds the belief that architecture can create better places, that architecture can affect society and humanity, and that it can have a role in making a place civilized by making a community more liveable.

We are required to further develop the proposed design project given by studio coordinator that reflects the theme and finalize a programme that addresses the needs of the required user group, as well as provides spaces that invite interaction with the surrounding contextual conditions. In addition to the theme of sustaining humanities, the module focuses on the development of students’ ability to integrate considerations of technology, environment and cultural context in architectural design and offers a platform for us to develop our own position in developing our individual project.

Project 1b: Design Brief and Strategy Proposal

In this stage, we will take the pre-design analysis to the next level, individually. The work will include: taking own architectural position, writing design brief, analysis of precedent studies, spatial programming and developing specific architectural design responses thru analytical diagrams, models & sketches. In relation to the position taken and programme response, each of us is required to produce a design proposal that demonstrates how the design approach, strategy and concept responding to the design brief and contextual conditions. We are also required to attend the Environmental Technology (E&T) workshop and apply it in the schemes to be presented. In this phase, we are expected to exert full design exploration thru spatial exploration and tectonic thinking. Explorations are expected to be shown series of study models, diagrams, 2D Drawings (floor plans, sections and elevations) and 3D Drawings.

Project 1c: Final Design

Once the design strategy has been fully developed, we have to come up with a fully resolved design; design should demonstrate our ability to integrate considerations for technology environment and cultural context through a finalized architectural design. As a final year student, our work is expected to demonstrate critical thinking skills (conceptualization), structural sense (buildability), sensitivity (key issues & environment), maturity (considering by laws & compliance with regulations), exploration (tectonic thinking and creative use of materials & space) and workability (a well referenced spatial organization & planning). We are expected to come up with a final design presentation
